Building a Fire Pit On Grass

1. Mark the spot for the fire pit

As you have taken the above into consideration, mark the perfect spot for your fire pit. The perfect fire pit is about four or five feet in diameter. A circular fire pit is the best. it allows all of your friends to sit around the fire an equal distance away from the center.

2. Measure and dig the hole for the fire pit

Make an X at the spot that represents the center of the fire pit. Use one of the bricks to nail a piece of stick into the center of the X. Attach a piece of string to the stick. The knot should be loose so that the string can move freely around the stick.

Use a tape measure and measure two feet on the string. Mark a circle on the grass around the center axis of the circle. The x should mark the center of the four feet diameter circle. If you do not have a tape measure you can guestimate the measurement using your feet. There is no need for the circle to be a perfect four feet diameter, it can be five or more and would still be perfect.

3. Dig the hole for the fire pit on the grass.

Now it is time for you to dig the hole for the fire pit. You should dig it about ten inches deep, with the sides gently angled out, like a soup bowl with a flat bottom. Shave off the layer of grass all around the perimeter of the pit, going back about one foot. The spade is the perfect tool for this job.

4. Line the inside perimeter of the hole with bricks

As close together as you can, line the inside perimeter of the fire pit with bricks. Place about 30 bricks vertically inside the fire pit covering the entire interior of the pit, and these bricks should be buried about two inches.

5. Arrange the fire pit rocks

Arrange the rocks along the top of the perimeter of the ring, jamming each rock into the soil a bit so that would shift. As you place each rock, try to fit it into the one next to it so that they are kind of spooning.

6. Place the remaining bricks.

You will have a number of excess bricks, place the remaining bricks flat on the dirt circle around the pit to create a hearth, with one row pointing away from the center of the fire pit.

If there are still more bricks remaining use them to form a row around the edge of the bricks pointing out, like an O, containing everything.

7. Pour the sand into the center of the fire pit

Pour sand into the center of the pit and spread evenly. The level of the sand should be about two inches. The sand will ensure that water does not settle at the bottom of the fire pit but instead have somewhere to go.

If you want to know the reason for putting sand at the bottom of the fire pit read the article titled, ‘Why Put Sand In The Bottom Of A Fire Pit?‘ It will be quite revealing.

8. Build the fire.

Stock some dry firewood in the center of the fire pit. pour a little fire pit lighter fluid on the wood and then light. Use dry wood to prevent smoke.

Note: when you are enjoying the heat from the fire you can use roast marshmallows or do s’mores.

Conclusion.

A fire pit ensures that you have fun even when the time is cold. Follow the fire safety rules of your state before you light or build a fire pit. You do not have to only put sand at the base of your fire pit.
